MOOCs

A Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is an online course aimed at unlimited participation and open access via the web. In addition to traditional course materials such as videos, readings, and problem sets, MOOCs provide interactive user forums that help build a community for students, professors, and teaching assistants (TAs). MOOCs are a recent development in distance education.

Mozilla Foundation

The Mozilla Foundation is a non-profit organization that exists to support and lead the open source Mozilla project. Founded in July 2003, the organization sets the policies that govern development, operates key infrastructure and controls Mozilla trademarks and copyrights. It owns a taxable subsidiary: the Mozilla Corporation, which employs many Mozilla developers and coordinates releases of the Mozilla Firefox web browser and Mozilla Thunderbird email client. The subsidiary is 100% owned by the parent, and therefore follows the same non-profit principles.

Ourproject

Ourproject.org is a web-based collaborative free content repository. It acts as a central location for offering web space and tools for projects of any topic, focusing on free knowledge. It aims to extend the ideas and methodology of free software to social areas and free culture in general. Thus, it provides multiple web services (hosting, mailing lists, wiki, ftp, forums…) to social/cultural/artistic projects as long as they share their contents with Creative Commons licenses (or other free/libre licenses).

Sourcefabric

Sourcefabric is a not-for-profit organisation based in Prague, Czech Republic, with branches in Berlin, Germany and Toronto, Canada and representatives in Minsk, Guatemala, Warsaw, Belgrade and Cluj. Sourcefabric was spun off from the Media Development Investment Fund's Campware project in May 2010. It develops open source software for independent news media organisations. Its software products formerly included Campsite and Campcaster.

SETI@home

SETI@home ("SETI at home") is an Internet-based public volunteer computing project employing the BOINC software platform, hosted by the Space Sciences Laboratory, at the University of California, Berkeley, in the United States. SETI is an acronym for the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence. Its purpose is to analyze radio signals, searching for signs of extra terrestrial intelligence, and is one of many activities undertaken as part of SETI. Everyone can participate by running a free program that downloads and analyzes radio telescope data obtained.

LocalWiki

LocalWiki is a grassroots effort to collect, share and open the world’s local knowledge.We want anyone, anywhere to be able to learn about where they live — their local government, the history of their neighborhoods, streets, social movements, noteworthy local figures, social services, schools – every facet of life in their community. And we believe that this vast collection of local knowledge should be created by the people who know it best - individual community members working together. There are already over 70 independent LocalWiki projects in 9 countries and in 7 languages.

Kuro5hin

A collaborative discussion website. Articles are created and submitted by Kuro5hin's users and submitted to a queue for evaluation. Site members can vote for or against publishing an article and, once the article has reached a certain number of votes, it is then published to the site or deleted from the queue.The site has been described as "a free-for-all of news and opinion written by readers".
